Conference on microplastics aboard the Belem in Nantes on 16 November 2022

Plastic has become an omnipresent part of our daily lives. As well as the macro-plastics that are so visible in our city streets, on our beaches and floating in our seas, what about microplastics? More pernicious because it's tiny and even invisible to the naked eye, it's everywhere: we eat it, drink it, breathe it. Where does it come from? Is it microplastic from the outset, or does it become so? Above all, what effect does it have on the health of ecosystems and on our own health? Among the five speakers, Marie-Hélène Ropers will present our exhibition, what happens to them in the body and their potential effects on health.

To mark the Belem's passage through Nantes, a convivial evening will be held on 16 November 2022 from 6.30pm to 8pm on the theme: ‘ Microplastics under the microscope! Ubiquitous pollution affecting everyone's health ‘.

The conference is being organised by SeaCleaners, an NGO working to combat plastic pollution of the oceans. SeaCleaners is developing a number of practical initiatives to find innovative solutions for collecting and recycling plastic waste at sea, contributing to the development of scientific knowledge on the sources and impacts of plastic pollution, and organising campaigns to collect litter and pass on environmentally responsible practices and attitudes to current and future generations.

The conference is free and open to the general public.
