Since 2012, the Sciences en Cour[t]s festival has been screening short films that popularise science.

On Friday 1 October at the Diapason on the Beaulieu campus in Rennes, the films will be shown to secondary school classes in the afternoon, then to the general public in the evening. The films will be put up for friendly ‘competition’: prizes will be awarded by the students, the public and a jury made up of professionals from the fields of research, cinema and popular science...

Here is the story of this adventure:

When I received an email in February 2021 from the Nicomaque association, which is organising the Sciences en Cour[t]s festival, I jumped at the chance to talk about my thesis to the general public through a short film. Until then I had never made a ‘serious’ film, just a few holiday montages, but fortunately we had a lot of support during the preparations for the festival. Between March and May, I received training in law, popularisation, script creation and filming equipment, and then I set about making the film.

Stage 1: choosing the subject, then thinking about the broad outlines of the script in June. In July/August I wrote the whole short film: first the dialogue/voice-overs to check that the film was going to be around 5 minutes long, and finally the technical breakdown of the film scene by scene. This enabled me to list all my human and material needs, and I then set about making a cardboard model and recruiting the film crew and actors. We shot the film and recorded the voice-over with Alice, Patricia, Elisabeth, Magalie, Alain and Fabien at the beginning of September, and then we had to ‘de-rotate’, i.e. select the best takes and the bits of film that we were going to incorporate into the short film, and find some music and sound effects to add. The film was edited by Vincent Melcion, one of the professionals accompanying us, on 15 September, so that it could be screened at the Sciences en Cour[t]s festival on 1 October 2021.

A great experience!
