An ontology to consider the multiple dimensions of agri-food systems

An ontology to consider the multiple dimensions of agri-food systems

To rise to the challenge of reconnecting agriculture, the environment, food and health, it is essential to exploit data from heterogeneous sources and formats. And that's a major challenge! However, ontologies offer a solution, as they provide a formal structure for describing and better interpreting data.

As a branch of artificial intelligence, ontologies make it possible to represent the knowledge generated from experimental data from different disciplines. We present a new ontology, PO2/TransformON, specific to food, bioproduct and biowaste engineering, which can be used to describe, in the form of concepts and relationships, all biomass transformation processes, from raw materials to finished products, food or bioproducts, integrating the recycling of co-products or residues and life cycle analysis.
