ARSENE project: developing lupins as an alternative to soya in France

The ARSENE project is a collaborative project involving several activities of the Terrena cooperative group, together with 4 partners: Biolie, Terres Inovia, Institut de l'élevage and INRAE, with the support of the France 2030 plan. ARSENE aims to develop the cultivation of lupins in France to improve the protein autonomy of farms and regions.

The ambition of the ARSENE project is to increase the area under cultivation to 25,000 ha, secure yields at 3 T/ha and thus enable annual national production of 75,000 T of protein-rich seeds.

On the upstream side, ARSENE will explore ways of securing crop yields, not only through genetics and the relaunch of a breeding programme with Cérience and INRAE, but also by determining the key factors in the technical itinerary. On the downstream side, the project will focus on animal nutrition and the incorporation of lupin into rations for sheep, rabbits, pigs and poultry. Teams from the Ciirpo (Centre Interrégional d'Information et de Recherche en Production Ovine de l'Institut de l'Élevage) experimental farm in Haute-Vienne will be carrying out the experiments on the use of lupin in sheep production. ARSENE will also be working on the development of new processes for extracting protein concentrates for human consumption and cosmetics.

The BIA ISD team will be involved in task 4, which focuses on human nutrition and cosmetics, and will be responsible for characterising the fine protein and lipid composition of protein concentrates and their functional properties in foods.
