BOOST’ International Associated Laboratory

On 4 April 2024, INRAE and Wageningen University, Department of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences, signed a five-year agreement to set up the International Associated Laboratory (IAL) ‘BOOST: design of Biobased (non-foOd and foOd) Systems for a world in Transition’. Bringing together scientists from the UR BIA Biopolymers, Interactions, Assemblies at INRAE and the Food Sciences Cluster at WUR, under the co-coordination of Claire Berton-Carabin, INRAE, and Karin Schroën, WUR, this LIA formalises a major collaboration between teams from INRAE and WUR aimed at developing new food and non-food systems that add value to plant raw materials and minimally processed ingredients.

With a view to sustainable and efficient agriculture, making the most of by-products is a promising area for improvement. Similarly, the construction of foodstuffs within the constraints of sustainability, ‘clean label’ and health requires an understanding of the composition, matrix and processing aspects. To meet these challenges, the construction and deconstruction of bio-based systems (food and non-food) will be studied by the two partners by developing joint research strategies and using complementary methodologies. Combining the specific expertise of the two partners will help to push back the boundaries of current research in these fields.

The LIA aims to develop a new doctoral course open to doctoral students from both partners on the LIA theme of ‘ Designing food and bio-based systems for a world in transition’, which could be given every two years, alternating between Wageningen and Nantes.

The LIA BOOST will also promote exchanges, training and communication activities: hosting WUR master's students at the BIA, facilitating visits by doctoral students and scientists, organising conferences/symposia on common research themes, shared monitoring of international calls for projects.
